Look up chanteuse, and you just might find Kristen's picture. Her voice is reminiscent of classic jazz singers, but the songs are edgy and smart and cut right across the lines in an interesting way. Her musical influences range from Elvis Costello to Led Zeppelin to Patsy Cline and Nina Simone. Although young by measure of years, she emits the soul of a veteran musician through her music, lyrics, and performance.
Kristen began singing and performing at the age of six, playing the guitar at age nine, and writing lyrics and music at age thirteen. She has had 12 years of vocal training, studying both privately and also with the Nashville Jazz Workshop and at Berklee College of Music. She spent her high school years performing around Nashville both solo and with local jazz groups such as The Tennessee Youth Jazz Orchestra and The Southern Fly-By-Night Singers. At 16 she received a scholarship to the Berklee Summer Program as well as a World Tour Scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music the following year.
Currently residing in her home town, Nashville, Tennessee, Kristen is actively pursuing her musical career. She released an acoustic album "Only Words," her first collection of original songs at 16. In 2004 she collaborated with producer Andy Behrens and found a more evolved jazz/folk sound on the EP "Moment in the Moon." In 2006 she worked with producer Ben Strano on "Love Letters from a Fool" and added an edgy twist to the jazz pop flair. This CD, her first full length, full band effort, takes the listener on an insightful journey via clever songwriting and unique vocal delivery - from the spine-tingling intrigue of Dangerous, through the anticipation of Whenever You Come Around, ending with the bittersweet melancholy of Fall.
Since the release of "Love Letters from a Fool" in May of 2006 Cothron has been touring regionally and is currently celebrating the release of her music video, "Dangerous." Whether she's singing a jazz standard, a classic soul tune, or one of her eclectic original songs- Kristen's sound is undeniably her own.

Release:
"With an amber, sultry tone and an expanded vocal range that she uses with dynamic subtlety, Cothron applies late-night jazz chops to contemporary adult pop. She's the rare young talent who cares more about expressing a mood and a story than simply showing off her voice. While her relaxed, come-hither purr pulls listeners in, it's the depth of the songs and how well she puts them across that brings people back time and again. She's been touring wider since the release of her fine independent album, Love Letters From a Fool, and she recently completed a stylish video for the song "Dangerous," turning in a modern Southern gothic clip that seems inspired by Craig Brewer's films. In a rare hometown treat, she brings together her full band for a special gig. 7:30 p.m. at 3rd & Lindsley" -Michael McCall, The Nashville Scene
"Count me in!" -Music Row Magazine
"...This is one 'dame' you definitely wouldn't mind walking in to your gin joint." -Bluesbunny.com
"Everything I have seen indicates to me that this is one very together woman! ... her CD is excellent - a really impressive range of material, but very cohesive and centered. It's eclectic in one sense, but not a bit "all over the place" in any way. She hits it out of the park to real music lovers looking for something different. Her voice and style is reminiscent of classic jazz singers, but the songs are edgy and smart and cut right across a lot of lines in a really good way. I think her music is very current, but not exactly like anybody. In fact, the best part of all is that she is so unique. I just think Kristen Cothron is a real winner!"
-Marvin Taylor - Five Feathers Music
“Somewhere between Fiona Apple and PJ Harvey, Cothron's style and sound sits just waiting for takers.” - Velocity Weekly (Louisville, KY)
"The lead track on this CD is called Dangerous and that may aptly describe this Nashville singer/songwriter. Her hauntingly sultry voice meshes wondrously with fresh lyrical approaches and a knack for creating edgy pop songs with blues subtleties. Intelligence, passion, and pure talent dominate the disc from the infectious groove with gritty touches in Last Chance Girl to the moody, sensuous ballad RSVP and folk driven Slow Down.” - Music Morsels
“Tougher than Fiona Apple, edgier than Norah Jones, Cothron combines cabaret and indie rock as well as anyone since Elvis Costello.” - The Memphis Playbook
“Nothing foolish about this. Cothron has depth and an elegant beauty that flows smoothly and seamlessly through each track. She exhibits passion and lust as if it is all she knows.” - The Leo (Louisville, KY)
"Silky smooth describes Kristen Cothron's vocals on her latest release, Love Letters from a Fool. It's filled with magnificent, refreshing music that will appeal to any listener." -Madalyn Sklar of GoGirlsMusic.com
"Cothron is a gifted singer/songwriter that adeptly synthesizes rock, blues, jazz and country and achieves a pleasing result on her new disc." - New Artist Radio
"Nashville-based-singer-songwriter Kristen Cothron has some heavyweight session players on Love Letters from a Fool, her first full length album. With Pat Buchanan (electric guitar), Tony Harrell (keyboards) Allison Prestwood (bass), Greg Morrow (DRUMS), and Dan Baird (electric guitar), you'd be forgiven if you thought this was to be a country record. It falls into a jazzy vibe with echoes of Patsy Cline, Crystal Gayle, Billie Holliday, and Sarah Vaughan. Kristen wrote or co-wrote all ten songs which intricately explore personal relations ships with a maturity that belies her tender years."- Robert Mills of Maverick Magazine UK
"Cothron has a way with words that puts fellow sirens Fiona Apple and Norah Jones to shame... call up your local radio station, ask them to burn all of their Shakira albums, and get Kristen Cothron in heavy rotation. An artist of her ability deserves as much support as possible." - Jon Dawson of South Eastern Performer Magazine
"Kristen Cothron presents Love Letters From a Fool, a tasty combination of twisting pop and lovelorn rock. Expression is the main ingredient on Love Letters and Cothron does it well. Genre mixing with a hint of southern mysticism throughout, Cothron does a good strong woman as well as she does a sensitive woman... Cothron’s ability to make introspective and prospective music is her strongest trait and is just as important as her voice." -Thomas Martin of Engima
"... Cothron displays a maturity and confidence that belies the fact that this is her first full-length album. Highlights include “Last Chance Girl” (“You’re not that good-looking, but I like the way you smoke your cigarette”) and the Western-noir of the title track. Have you been searching for music’s next bold bad girl? Cothron is the buried treasure you’re seeking." - Mare Wakefield of Performing Songwriter Magazine
"Cothron is a young singer-songwriter who uses her jazz trained alto to bring unusual dynamics to well-written, confessional material" -The Nashville Scene
"Look up chanteuse, and you just might find Kristen’s picture. She has a fluid, beautiful, melodic voice, with shades of Peggy Lee in some of her phrasing. Her vocals are a seduction soundtrack, or perhaps a bubble bath with candles and champagne." - Music News Nashville
“Cothron’s avant garde jazz rhythms show off her mature vocals that are as sweet as she looks. In fact, to me shades of Billie Holiday come to mind… Excellent arrangements, wonderful lyrics, beautiful jazzy pop vocals and masterful musicians make this independently released CD a must have.” -Brad Fischer of The Nashville Music Guide
“The songs are balanced on a long, winding road full of dips and curves with pedal to the floor lyrics. The release opens with the song, “Dangerous” that oozes with domination. It’s like a cold martini, meant to be shaken, not stirred as it is poured hazardously into the glass. This release is sealed with a stamp of mystery complete with nice depth to its various instrumentation throughout the tracks. Watch out for this one, there’s no doubt her next release is going to be killer!” - Heather Corcoran, CoffeeHouseTour.com
“Kristen is just plain cool. Through her influences she’s developed a style that is unique and flavorful. Keep your eye on Kristen. She’s on her way to the top.” - Gary Hays: Owner- Hobo Joes Songwriter Café
“…Cothron uses words and melodies rarely seen in a singer/songwriter much less a newcomer. . . a gifted voice that is pure gold and songs that breath new life into the cliché ridden mainstream…”- Music Industry News Network
“Kristen is a young lady who has a soulful voice and is quite a good entertainer.” - Brad Stauffer of the Tennessee Jazz Orchestra
“Reminiscent of the blues and ballad singers of the 40’s, with alternative instrumental sounds and flecked with blues, jazz, folk, county, and rock.” - Will Jordan: Senior Feature Writer, The Franklin Review Appeal
“Impeccable vocalist who was in the Tennessee Youth Jazz Orchestra and has sung with the acclaimed a cappella group the Southern Fly By Night Singers.” - The Nashville Rage
“Her voice clearly belied her age, allowing her to pay homage to (Dottie) West when she sang ‘Here Comes My Baby Back Again’. She nailed it perfectly. Kelton Marsh, Dottie West’s brother, sat in front, rapt, listening to the teenager sing.” - Southern Standard, McMinnville, TN |
