Los Angeles, CA – Natalie Janssen’s EP Split plays like a four-course meal: the flavors of every song linger in your head, artfully complementing and coalescing to leave you satisfied and full. She even jokes that the recipe for her songs is “one part rock, one part country, one part jazz, one part orchestra;” a ‘recipe’ that gives the singer-songwriter genre sincere, fresh, folk-rock attitude.
Each song on Split weaves together a unique tapestry of instruments anchored by Janssen’s voice, which has been described as “thick, rich” and “unbelievably warm.” Highlights include the timeless love song, I Don’t Wanna Waste Another Minute, and the bonus track Brick in the Boot, a humorous blue-grass romp conveying a stranded motorist’s fear of ‘horny truckers.’
As her debut song-writing EP, Split is aptly titled because that one small word, split, best describes Janssen’s diverse musical background. She is a well-respected singer in the “new music” classical world, and at the same time, she is in demand as a singer for many other musical styles ranging from rock to swing. Janssen’s lyrics are genuine and uncomplicated. She states: “Songs are polaroids of your feelings: emotional snapshots in time. There are many sides to my life. And the place where it all combines—where it all funnels together in the most incredible way, is in my songs; you can hear it in my singing. My tunes are my anchor. They are honest reflections of my country girl heart and all the wonderful craziness of my life.”
In 2003 Janssen had her Carnegie Hall Debut, performing the world premiere of a piece written for her by New York Based composer Lisa Bielawa. Immediately after she rushed back to the West Coast to perform Greek folk songs, sing with a swing band, and write country tunes. To further the split theme, Janssen has a varied history that includes interning at the White House, living in Costa Rica, and traveling between New York, Los Angeles, and Colorado.
Split was recorded with Janssen’s long time friend and musical collaborator, Jeff Phurrough at his studio in Hollywood CA.

Biography:
The biggest question I get about my EP is ‘Split? Really? That’s your title? Why?”
That one word, ‘split,’ could be my bio. I am a Colorado mountain girl, heart, body and soul, but my head is in L.A., and sometimes New York. I have the most incredible, fairy-tale or even “Leave It To Beaver-esque” family, but my own love life is at the very least complicated and has often stunk. I have sung, played, and studied with all kinds of crazy amazing musicians. I have spent many football seasons actively cheering the Denver Broncos and then spending hours on Sunday nights singing and losing myself in polytonal music. I started performing when I was a kid, and have gigged country, and rock, and jazz, and swing, and ‘new music’ classical, and folk, and bluegrass, and blues, and in some part of my soul, they all fit. Likewise, I have jumped from Costa Rica, to interning at the White House, to Los Angeles, to debuting at Carnegie Hall, and back to the top of a mountain in Colorado. The place where all of this combines-- funnels together in the most incredible way, is in my songs; you can hear it in my singing. My tunes are an anchor. They are honest reflections of my country girl heart and all the wonderful craziness of my life.
And in the end, even though I am ‘split’ in many things, I am an indie folk-rock artist with a little bit of a lot of other stuff thrown in for taste.

| Description: Proudly NOT Hip Hop. The Jazzy-Country stain in the indie-rock genre. If the music of Jewel, Fiona Apple, The Dixie Chicks, and Alanis Morissette merged you would have Natalie Janssen. |
